Metallica: 10 Hardest James Hetfield Riffs You Can't Play
5. Dyers Eve
When it comes to just the typical BPM, "Dyers Eve" is probably the hardest thing you'll ever have to tackle in the Metallica catalog. With its hardcore backbeat and intense chord changes, this was extreme metal before extreme metal even became a thing.
A lot of the intensity of the track comes from Lars Ulrich's incomparable double bass performance, but Hetfield's riffs show that you should never take your eyes off the genius at work. Thousands of guitarists have compared the fast riffs of thrash to the sound of gunfire, but this is the one instance where Hetfield's right arm becomes a full-on assault rifle as he hammers out power chords the way most of us breathe in air.
Admittedly, this song does give the guitarists a bit of a break though. During the verses, all the guitar has to do is hold out ringing power chords while the drums get busy in the back. The only reason I can think of for why this occurs is because it is so damn fast in the previous sections that playing any harder would not be able to done by a mortal man. They may have had more complex songs on And Justice For All, but attempting to play this song is when you go for broke and just see what happens.
