Metallica: 10 Most Brutally Heavy Songs - Ranked
6. My Apocalypse
Death Magnetic was known as the band's triumphant return to heaviness, but that didn't mean that they had forgotten how to experiment. The entire album featured a few callbacks like an extension of "The Unforgiven" series into a trilogy, but the end of the record really showed Metallica going back to more horrific territory.
With its fast pace and (relatively) short runtime, "My Apocalypse" is probably the closest thing to punk that Metallica had tried since their initial inception. This is also known as one of the most difficult guitar passages on the entire record, with even Kirk Hammett admitting he has struggled to pull the track off on the live stage. Even when the track slows up in the chorus, the guitar slides act as a butcher's hook that doesn't so much lure you in as much as does throw you up against the wall.
Death Magnetic does get some hate from Metallica fans because of its shoddy production, but the flair behind this tune is something that requires sonic blemishes to really get its point across. It's certainly not gonna replace "Enter Sandman" in the setlist any time soon, but this is one of the more overlooked jams of Metallica's return to form.
