Metallica: Kill ‘Em All - Ranking Every Song Worst To Best
9. Motorbreath
And now we could to a song that predates Metallica itself. After years of looking at James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich as the co captains of the group, this is one of the only songs to be attributed solely to James in terms of writing credits. Given that this dates back to his days with his previous band Leather Charm, Mr. Hetfield was just coming into his own as one of the almighty riff crafters of his time.
Although most of the song is just based around a single riff, the melody of the track is all over the place, with James delivering these savage lyrics like a metal version of Johnny Rotten. Whereas most of Metallica's catalog has songs that make you want to scream along in concert, this is one of the few tracks that could be considered a singalong during their '80s period.
This is also one of the first instances where you realize that Kirk Hammett was the right guy for the job after Dave Mustaine was fired, bringing in a bluesy flavor to the solo while never sacrificing the wailing sections. Even though most Metallica songs are a little tricky to nail down, Motorbreath is one of the first tracks that actually feels closer to punk than metal in spots.
