Metallica: Kirk Hammett's 11 Best Guitar Solos

5. Dyers Eve

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6kb5fvv6_A Many metal fans like to debate the age-old Kirk Hammett vs. Dave Mustaine argument - being that the latter used to be in Metallica before the launch of their first album and then went on to form Megadeth - and although there's no doubt Mustaine can definitely play faster and has a more thrash-focused approach to his writing, the Dyers Eve solo is the one ace-in-the-hole that Hammett-defenders can throw up as one of his most accomplished works it's very hard to get right. Right from the off it's more deployment of the wah pedal, which to many lesser guitarists can just be an excuse to cover up some sloppy playing, here it adds a whole new sense of speed to the amount of notes being played, with each section building on the last to the point of just surrendering to how impossibly fast this part of the song is. The mid-solo break that explores the rest of the neck is only a slight reprieve from the otherwise high-pitched madness that makes up the other two slices of this perfect thrash-sandwich, as when everything kicks back in and Hammett dives into another crazy-fast tapping section it marks one of the high points on the whole album.
