Metallica: Ranking Every Album’s Last Song
8. Dyers Eve - …And Justice For All
The group's seminal fourth album ...And Justice For All closes out with a track called "Dyer's Eve". Never heard of it? Don't worry. You're not alone.
The song is fine and does a good job of carrying on the album's themes of political injustice and the loss of liberty, but it's just... average.
It's pretty basic thrash fare with a nice middle section that switches things up nicely. Hetfield's voice is just entering its gravelly phase, which works in the track's favour, and Kirk's solo is a step up from "My Apocalypse", but that step isn't huge.
What's most upsetting is that ...And Justice For All is split into two discs. The second disc's second side ends with this song, but its opposite number on disc one is, well, "One". One of Metallica's best and most famous songs. And it was right there for the taking.
Had "One" been the closer for this album, it would 100% have topped this list. Unfortunately, this was not to be, and instead we ended up with a song that absolutely does the job but just leaves us wanting that little bit more.
