Metallica: Ranking Every Album's First Song

4. Battery - Master Of Puppets

"Battery" is the song on this list that Metallica have played the most times live, with just one exception. Listening back to the song now, you can see why that is.

Taken from the band's third album and coming out party, Master of Puppets (also their most played song), "Battery" has the honour of being directly ahead of that album's title track. Would that song have been higher up this list if it was first in the running order? Perhaps, but "Battery" more than holds its own.

Another song that starts slow before kicking into overdrive, the track is actually about the San Fransisco thrash metal scene and how outsiders will never truly understand its appeal.

A fantastic blend of huge melodies and kick-ass thrash, the short, sharp lyrical delivery of James Hetfield makes this one of Metallica's angriest sounding songs. Somehow, though, you can still join in with the words.

"Battery" has been included on a variety of live albums over the years, including closing out their orchestra-infused album, S&M. It's a favourite amongst fans and clearly the band love it too, otherwise they probably wouldn't have played it nearly a thousand times in their live shows.
