Rammstein's 10 Biggest Controversies
2. Küss Mich!
Rammstein and the political discussion is something that has followed the sextet throughout their entire career, as documented several times throughout this list, and whilst they have never avoided controversy there have been several times where they’ve outright said “no” about certain accusations and topics. We’ve already looked at the multiple claims of Nazism over the years, despite the existence of the song Links 2 3 4 (“they want my heart on the right spot, but if I look below, it beats in my left breast”).
And so it’s nice for Rammstein to be involved in a “controversy” that tends to only upset the most extremely close minded of folks. During the European leg of the 2019 stadium tour, drummer Christian 'Doom' Schneider often took to his crowd-surfing dingy (yes, that’s a thing) whilst waving a rainbow flag in support of LGBT rights. This all led towards the St Petersburg show of the tour where, during a performance of the song Ausländer, guitarists Paul Landers and Richard Kruspe shared a simple peck on each other’s lips. Sounds rather quaint until you remember Russia’s strict anti-LGBT laws.
Naturally, this outraged several vehemently conservative Russia politicians where it is illegal to produce material that represents “non-traditional family and sexual values” and perpetrators oftentimes find themselves detained and incarcerated. Vitaly Miolonov, a member of Russia’s lower federation State Durma, branded the band as “idiots” for the stunt. However, at least to public knowledge, there has been no official backlash.
