RIP Storm Thorgerson: 20 Greatest Album Designs

5. Scorpions €“ Lovedrive

ScorpionsLovedrive This particular cover that Thorgerson did for German rockers Scorpions was stirred up no small amount of controversy both in its home country and abroad. It's not hard to guess where some of that controversy came from just by looking at the above image, and it should also be noted that the back cover featured the image, only this time with woman's her breasts completely exposed (minus the gum). Parents everywhere may have been offended, but the album became one of the Scorpions best-selling releases. Lovedrive's artwork was subsequently awarded the title of "Best album sleeve of 1979" by Playboy magazine.

4. Biffy Clyro €“ Puzzle

biffyclyroPuzzle Thorgerson's first cover design for Biffy Clyro coincided with their breakthrough to mainstream recognition with the album Puzzle. Thorgerson's use of otherworldly dreamlike imagery proved to be such a good companion to Biffy Clyro's lyrics that Thorgerson would go on to design the covers of both their subsequent albums, as well as several single (which area all worth checking out too, but unfortunately didn't make it into this list). Part of what makes the cover of Puzzle so good is the sheer breath of emotional turmoil it conveys, and like the best of Thorgeson's work, it left it up to the fans to "puzzle" over its meaning.
