Smashing Pumpkins: 11 Essential Tracks All Fans Should Listen To

9. Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans

One of the many epics off Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans is an underrated masterpiece. It stands apart from the likes of XYU and Thru The Eyes of Ruby with its optimism and wishfulness. It captures what if feels like to be young and daydream aloud. It plays like a cinematic fable and never manages to overstay its welcome, breezing through its nine minute running time.

The song has a strong feeling of aimlessly floating as if in a stream of consciousness; its destination unknown and journey experienced forever held close. It has some of Billy Corgan's best lyrical imagery such as the line "Porcelina, she waits for me there With seashell hissing lullabies And whispers fathomed deep inside my own". It reveals a world within ourselves we can retreat into and live in sanctuary, something no one can take away from us.

From it's quiet intro that grows louder and louder as if transitioning from consciousness to its dreamlike guitar work, Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans pulls us in like waves carving through the sea, never letting go.
