Smashing Pumpkins: 11 Essential Tracks All Fans Should Listen To
6. Here Is No Why
One of the greatest songs from an already stacked album, Here Is No Why is a monster of a song. Playing in the vein of a power pop song, Corgan's penchant for pop music shines with a riff that commands attention like an anthem to march to.
The song has one of the best Pumpkins choruses written as Corgan cries out with such power and conviction we cling onto every word uttered. It's some of his best written lyrics centering on his depression as a teen and not allowing it to deter him from pursuing his passions.
Its message strikes to the core of any person having endured this period in their life and anyone overcoming attrition. It doesn't come off as trite or forced, and that's the charm of it. Corgan has the ability to evoke and rekindle a youthful spirit in us.
The guitar strums along with mainly one chord driving the entire song. It's incredibly simple compared to songs like Geek U.S.A. that changes up second after second. This makes the chord changes and fuzz sections more impactful with great payoff. Each chorus that follows adds slight variations until the bridge's solo. It doesn't overstay its welcome and is just the right length to revitalize the song and continue towards the end.
With a roster of songs that have countless amazing winding solos, Here Is No Why's straightforward pop structure in comparison is surprisingly simple. What makes it unique is how deceptively simple it is, however, and how it adds clever flourishes and shifts to keep it interesting. Corgan mastered pop structure at this point and the band's long epics prove that.
