The Beatles: All US Number Ones Ranked Worst To Best
7. Come Together
18th Number One, 1969 - Written by John Lennon
Many Beatles songs (Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Yellow Submarine, etc.) were rumoured to be about drugs, but Come Together actually came from the slogan to a political party which supported the legal use of LSD.
In 1969, American psychologist Timothy Leary was running for Governor of California, and he asked John to write a song based on his campaign's slogan, 'Come Together - Join the Party!' While this arrangement never came through, the song did, and it's probably no coincidence that it ended up being one of the band's trippiest numbers, with its psychedelic groove and nonsense lyrics. Those things, combined with John constantly whispering 'Shoot me' into the mic, add to the mystical magnetism of the song. We're not too sure who Old Flat Top is, but boy, are we enthralled by him.
Fun Fact: On the subject of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, The Beatles never released it as a single, but it was later covered and taken to number one by Elton John, with vocals and guitar by Lennon himself.
