1. Smash's Bombshell/Hit List
Not a movie, but to finish Id like to tap into the grown-up Glee. Smash has taken a downhill turn throughout its second season (or rather a plummet), but the best bits have consistently been the songs from and glimpses into the two musicals it follows, Hit List and Bombshell. Bombshell is the musical that we originally began following in the shows first season, with long-running development problems, workshops and cast changes. Now, it has finally blossomed into what is seemingly a more-or-less successful show that I wouldnt mind going to see myself. As the show revolves around getting it to Broadway, the whole thing has that overblown and over the top theatrical feeling around it that wouldnt feel out of place on our biggest stages in the real world, so it would be interesting to see how the crossover could work. As the shows now been cancelled, Megan Hilty could reprise her role as Marilyn for us if she struggles to get work (although she shouldnt, shes been brilliant) and the music is both catchy and emotionally satisfying- the minute we saw of the closing number when Hilty blows everyone away would be undeniably phenomenal to witness live. In a very different vein, Hit List is most comparable to Rent, with its tale of love, creative theft and murder. I would absolutely love to see the full version of this, with its clever look at contemporary culture with slightly rocky songs and a clever structure (thanks to director Dereks intervention). These two may just be a total pipedream, but who knows in the world of musical theatre.
