The Smiths: 20 Best Songs

9. Half A Person

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dZSLJwKlEI 'Half A Person' is a beautiful lament to unrequited love, to being an outsider, and for the privileged few, being screwed up by fame. Sound familiar? Well, it reminds you of lots of bands, not least Nirvana - stick with me here. Unlikely bedfellows? Not at all Cobain was from the same school of thought as Morrissey and Michael Stipe from REM, which was in my view: 'We're the voice of a generation that doesn't want to be part of a generation - individuals can't be part of a crowd." And he legendarily impersonated Morrissey on Top of the Pops when they first broke with 'Smells like Teen Spirit.' The standout lyric here is "In the days that you were hopelessly poor, I just liked you more." Ironically. Morrissey didn't write the line, it was the kiss off in a letter he received from an ex-devoted fan and his own tacit admission that things had started to change for the worst for the band.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about. As well as writing for What Culture, I occasionally write a blog http://tedney.blogspot.co.uk and sometimes use Twitter, but sparingly @TedneyNash
