The Smiths: 20 Best Songs

5. The Queen Is Dead

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz5IFl7uCis The MC5 meets The Velvet Underground with Che Guevara on vocals. Lou Reed will be looking down (or up) saying 'Damn you, how did you did you do my stuff, but better than I did?' Featuring Johnny's finest chugging rhythm guitar, Andy Rourke playing bass that defies gravity, and a lyric that calls for revolution and evolution, this is the perfect classic album opener. Only The Smiths could have gotten away with such a song. Morrissey is single-handedly trying to bring down the monarchy, mocking them, saying he and his band is more important than them - brazenly picking a fight with her highness: 'She said 'eh. I know you I know you and you cannot sing, I said that's nothing you should hear me play piano...' You have to admire the man's balls when he shrugs off an imaginary ruck with HRH to finish with the line "life is very long, when you're lonely'" Admitting he has more in common with Liz than even he'll admit.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about. As well as writing for What Culture, I occasionally write a blog http://tedney.blogspot.co.uk and sometimes use Twitter, but sparingly @TedneyNash
