http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=700I5J_305I A wonderful song about the uncertainty of love, which probably explains why a control freak like Morrissey stayed celibate for so long. It's a showcase of Johnny Marr's virtuosity, the music goes in many different directions but never loses its thread, providing a seamless backdrop for Morrissey to tell his tale. The Smiths lyrics were all about the human condition, they weren't directed at any particular age group. 'Girl Afraid' isn't about teenage angst; it's about the everyday stories of day to day relationships - and also that first thrill of meeting someone. Next time you have a date, play this song before you go out - it's sung by someone who not only knows what's going through your mind, but they also understand how your date is feeling, too.
What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about.
