1. The Doors The Doors
Taking their name from Aldous Huxleys 1954 novel, The Doors of Perception, The Doors, much like the Velvets, erred away from all of that hippy crap and instead cranked up the existential dial. Album opener Break On Through (To The Other Side) was as stark a mission statement as could have been mustered in under two and a half minutes. There were plenty of other dimensions to the Doors however. Light My Fire was a snake-hipped, sexual and just plain strange epic led by Ray Manzareks initimable organ playing. The End was another beast altogether; Morrisons winding, oedipal nightmare caught a lot of attention both from fans and authorities keen to censor such blatant and disgusting ideas. Alas, we all know the sad story that followed. Five short years later Morrison was dead, having hailed the taxi marked EXCESS and ordering the driver to go as fast as possible to their destination. http://youtu.be/ZDN9y2vTdUs
