4. Beverly Hills
Artist: Weezer Album: Make Believe (DGC/Geffen) I was driving around with my little brother when this song came on. I said, what is this? This is horrible! He said, I think the bands name is Weezer. And all my fond teenage memories died a horrible death. Weezers self-titled debut album, (the Blue Album) was, and Im not exaggerating, brilliant. Laid-back surfer rock, angsty outsider anthems, and a soft-loud Pixies-esque dynamic is everything an American teenager needs. Pinkerton was pretty good, and I kind of lost track after that. But that first album, that was incredible. And then Beverly Hills came out. The most I can say for this song is that the video is kind of funny. But I will not accept irony as an excuse. I really think this was a case of failed trendiness, in a way. The group wanted to stay relevant, and popular, so wrote a cheesed-down version of their earlier songs that would resonate with the musical wasteland of early 21st century radio. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HL_WvOly7mY
