http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t63_HRwdAgk Taken from 1984's The Work's is perhaps one of the most easily recognisable Queen songs on the countdown. The song which lyrically speaks about the traditional power of radio to convey messages to its audiences while fighting against more modern technologies was inspired by Roger Taylor's (then) young son. The infant, who now plays drums as part of the We Will Rock You band alongside the successful Queen musical of the same name, was apparently heard to say "Radio Ga Ga" by the drummer and the phrase stuck in his head. The video for the song is also fairly recognisable, featuring the band in front of an assembled audience of followers, who clap their hands simultaneously upon command. These particular "extras" were sourced from the Queen fan club and comprised competition winners who'd won the right to attend the trip. The band also used footage from the classic film 'Metropolis' within the video and interspersed their imagery using very advanced CGI for the time with segments from the film. Film critics have praised Queen for doing this as the film has been indirectly promoted in the intervening years as a result. The Works sparked a changing time in Queen's music, following on from the experimental "disco" feel of Hot Space and coming at a time when some of the band members notably John Deacon and Freddie Mercury were considering either solo projects or leaving the Industry altogether. Both Brian May and Roger Taylor have spoken about the experience over the years since and said the album was particularly difficult to make due to tensions within the band. Their subsequent Live Aid appearance in 1985 served as a massive boost and turning point which encouraged them to continue, before naturally taking a mutual break in 1987 to pursue solo endeavours.
First studied Journalism in Ireland in 2003, returning to Sunderland University on the tenth anniversary of my first studies in the subject to continue towards an MA. Interested in all sorts including WWE, Music, Film, TV and Games. Has travelled around a bit to places like California, Ontario and Mexico and plans to do more of the same soon again.
Recently I've been writing pieces on my favourite topics which have included obscure theme music from nostalgic shows, Guns N' Roses and a few other surprises I'll be happy to share in time!
