Top 20 Classic Queen Tracks

8. I'm Going Slightly Mad

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb-3seZSQ_Q The second single from 1991's 'Innuendo', this track is a particular favourite, especially due to its rather absurd music video which involved everything from a man in a Gorilla suit (years before Cadbury's made that a thing) and Brian May dressed like a penguin €“ with the inclusion of a real penguin for good measure. The video also received a significant amount of co-direction and creative input from Mercury who, despite being very frail and months away from his passing, took a very active and mobile role in the video. It was also the first Queen video to feature a clean shaven Mercury since 1980's 'Save Me' from 'The Game' Although the video gives the song a rather comical tone €“ with lines such as "I'm driving only three wheels these days...I think I'm a banana three" the song was allegedly written by Mercury based on his own experiences of failing health and illness. Like most of the material written at this time the song is based on a great deal of Mercury's own personal experiences, and the track is said to recount how Mercury felt on days when he didn't take strong enough medication to overcome the severe side-effects of his illness. Mercury's appearance in the video is said to be inspired by Tim Burton (who had just recently created the films Edward Scissorhands and Batman) and features heavy makeup, black and white set up and saturation of light €“ a lot of which was done to hide Mercury's own condition from the public. In 2011 the Scottish band Glasvegas performed a cover version of this song in an ultra slow format and using an echo machine. To be perfectly honest we don't recommend you seek that out.

First studied Journalism in Ireland in 2003, returning to Sunderland University on the tenth anniversary of my first studies in the subject to continue towards an MA. Interested in all sorts including WWE, Music, Film, TV and Games. Has travelled around a bit to places like California, Ontario and Mexico and plans to do more of the same soon again. Recently I've been writing pieces on my favourite topics which have included obscure theme music from nostalgic shows, Guns N' Roses and a few other surprises I'll be happy to share in time!
