2. Dear God by XTC
Significant Lyrics: (the whole song, really) And all the people that You made in Your image/See them fighting in the street/'Cause they can't make opinions meet about God/I can't believe in You/Did You make disease and the diamond blue?/Did You make mankind after we made You?/And the Devil too? This is certainly the most overt example of anti-religion in this article. There is really nothing subtle about Andy Partridges lyrics, especially as he ends every verse with I cant believe in you. The approach is what makes this especially noteworthy as he is expressing his frustration and disbelief in a letter to the exact entity he is saying doesnt exist. Needless to say, the actual intended recipient of his words is not God but the people who believe in God, particularly those who dont work to improve life here on Earth because they are instead wrapped up in their infatuation of God. Again, the truth or merit of these lyrics can be argued forever, and if people are approaching the conversation from different perspectives, they will likely never come to an agreement. But we can all acknowledge that Partridge is providing us with an interesting challenge to either refute or defend.
