4. Goodbye My Lover - James Blunt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVyggTKDcOE There are few artists that are as polarising as James Blunt, for every person who enjoys his music, there is another who absolutely despises it, characterising it as boring, wet and repetitive. Despite being one of those who does enjoy the music of James Blunt, I can understand those who criticise him. The only song I feel that merits exclusion from this criticism is this one. I always found Goodbye My Lover a moving piece of music, but after the events of a couple of years ago it has elevated itself to a whole new level of emotion for me. This is the only song on this list in fact that I can personally relate to from past experience. A few years ago when my girlfriend and I broke up (we're back together now you'll be happy to know!), I made the mistake of playing this immediately after. Part a coincidence that I happened to be in a James Blunt swing at the time, part down to my gravitating towards depressing things rather than cheery things when I'm down... regardless of why I chose this song, it left me an emotional wreck after such a painful experience and with hindsight it probably wasn't the best move to make.
