Weezer: 10 Worst Songs You Need To Forget

2. Thought I Knew

Weezer went full Beatles mode on 2008’s Red Album. Trying to produce a 6 minute singalong in The Greatest Man That Ever Lived, sharing songwriting duties, and even letting every member sing songs on the album.

Sometimes though, there’s a reason why the lead singer should stay the lead singer. Thought I Knew is guitarist and occasional keyboardist Brian Bell’s attempt at a 90s alt rock song. It feels like a song that wouldn’t be too far removed from the Battle of the Bands scene in School of Rock.

Brian Bell had the least consistent solo career during the original Weezer line-up’s hiatus in the late 1990s, and it shows. A superior second version documenting a more haunting heartbreak was released for Brian Bell’s side project The Relationship in 2010. The fact that the song was allowed a second release outside of Weezer shows how little the rest of the band cared about preserving the artistic integrity of the pre-released Thought I Knew on the Red Album. Weak.
