10. Mile 81
Mile 81 is Stephen King's third take on a story about an evil car (after Christine and From A Buick 8). And, frankly, his best - in an insane, "what on Earth did I just read?" sort of way. It starts off with a ten year old on a trek out to an abandoned rest stop. Along the way, he finds a half finished bottle of vodka, and takes a few shots, because of course a ten year old would. By the time he gets into the building, he's buzzed; once there, he checks out a little porn, and winds up taking a nap on what might be the most disgusting mattress ever encountered in fiction. With us so far? While the kid is out, a creepy old mud covered car pulls into the entrance to the rest stop, knocking over a traffic cone in the process. Masquerading as a broken down vehicle, when the first good Samaritan stops to help, it promptly eats him. Not with a comical face full of teeth, but rather by absorbing him. At first. The car is... sticky, and once it gets a hold of a victim, it doesn't let go. Then the teeth - unseen, yet there - come out. And it's more than capable of breaking bones and tearing off limbs. How's that for insane?
