I think it is always different to break into the world of games consoles with a new piece of hardware. After all, you have to first create the hardware and then suitably impress enough developers to convince them to create games for your new console. It is pretty much why we have only had the big three of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo for the past few years. But crowd sourcing one way of getting some new tech out there, and that is what happened with Ouya. Ouya is a games console powered by Android that hooks up to your television. The idea being that developers already know how Android works because they've been using it for years in mobile phone and tablet games. It was launched as a low cost, small console setting it quite apart from the high end of the market. It was incredibly successful when it went up at Kickstarter. It only asked for £950,000 I say only, because it actually raised $8,596, 474 from 63, 416 backers. Incredible really. The popularity of the console hasn't directly translated into software sales but more than anything, Ouya showed that crowd sourcing is a viable option for gaming in a big way.
