10 Amazing Things That Your Body Does Every Single Day
3. Dreams
The weirdest thing about dreaming, is how not-weird we find it.
If you told someone that you were going to go and lie down in a darkened room for a few hours and hallucinate wildly, they'd probably ask for a bit of whatever you've been taking.
Whilst we're not 100% sure as to exactly why we dream, we're pretty certain that it has something to do with information processing and memory formation. Generally speaking, you don't have that much control over your dreams, unless you're one of the few people that is able to have lucid dreams.
Lucid dreaming is a state in which the dreamer becomes aware that they are dreaming. This can happen by accident at first, but in time, with practice, it is possible to gain control over your dream world and manipulate it to your will.
Dreams are unique to everyone but there are some recurring themes that occur such as teeth falling out, being chased and being unable to run. Some people even report dreaming in black and white. Interestingly, one study found that this was more common in the older generations.
They discovered that people who were exposed to only black and white TV and film in their childhoods dreamt in black and white around 25% of the time. Makes sense if you think about it.
As more and more people grow up with colour media, it is thought that black and white dreaming will all but die out.
