10 Things You Didn't Know About JK Rowling

3. She Wrote The Names Of The Hogwarts Houses On A Sick Bag

In an interview with Amazon, Rowling described the process of coming up with the various names for the Hogwarts houses (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw respectively).

Rowling was on a plane at the time, and when the names popped into her head she realised but had nowhere to write them down. Nowhere, that is, but a sick bag.
€œThe names of the Hogwarts Houses were created on the back of an aeroplane sick bag. Yes, it was empty.€
It makes sense. Over the years, Rowling has admitted that she still likes to write things by hand, despite the increasing popularity of word processors. In general, she does a first draft using pen and then completes her first edit while typing it up onto the computer. Interestingly, she also much prefers writing with a black pen rather than a blue one.
