Apparently life married to Dr. Seuss still cant prevent depression. Helen Palmer was born in 1899 in New York. She contracted polio but recovered and would go on to graduate from Wellesley College with honours. While at Oxford University, she met Theodore Seuss Geisel who would later be known as Dr. Seuss. He was not studying to be a doctor, but rather an English professor, and Palmer encouraged him to focus on his artistic endeavours instead, leading him down a path for his future work. They married in 1927. Palmer was a writer and editor as well. She is best known for Do You Know What Im Going To Do Next Saturday and I Was Kissed by a Seal at the Zoo. She also expanded Dr. Seuss Gustav the Goldfish into A Fish Out of Water. Throughout much of Dr. Seuss career, Palmer was a guiding influence and supporter. Palmer suffered from cancer later in life and grew despondent over her husbands affair with Audrey Stone Dimond, whom he planned to marry after Palmers death. She overdosed on barbiturates in 1967 leaving Dr. Seuss to carry on with his life. Oh, the places youll go.
