10 Best Bill Murray Stories (That Nobody Believes Actually Happened)
7. The One Where He Took A Family Out To Dinner
In late 2013, veteran New York Times gossip columnists George Rush and Joanna Molloy released a collection of memoirs called 'Scandal: A Manual' and of course there's a Bill Murray story in there. In the book, Rush states that he had heard of stories of Murray being a jerk, but that he also had a softer side, and one example always stood out to him. A friend of Molloy's, called Joanne, was apparently in a department store shopping for Christmas when her children noticed the actor, recognising him from Ghostbusters. Excitedly, they ran up to him and Joanne asked for a picture, which Murray angrily denied. Mortified, Joanne took her kids and left. However, just before she could pull away in her car, Murray knocked on the window and apologised, explaining that he had just had an argument with his wife and asked them if he could make it up to them by taking them out to dinner at the Tribecca Grill in New York. Of course, they said yes. Apparently they all had a good time, and when Murray asked Joanne if she was still angry at him, she joked 'I'll let you live.' That line wouldn't mean much coming from most people, but it turns out Joanne was the daughter in law of Carmine Persico, the Godfather of New York's leading crime organisation, the Colombo Family - something Murray wasn't aware of until years later. It's fortunate for us, and Murray, that his conscience got the better of him, otherwise who knows what could have happened?
