1. The Prince's Tale

Harry Potter Snape The Prince S Tale
Warner Bros.

Book: The Deathly Hallows

Chapter Synopsis: Harry delves into the Pensieve one last time to learn the truth about Snape.

No Harry Potter fan will ever forget reading this chapter for the first time. Despite being one of the longest chapters in the series, readers were hooked on every word of Snape’s past.

There were many revelations unveiled in this chapter. By going all the way back to Snape’s childhood, Rowling revealed that he had loved Lily Evans (Harry’s mother) throughout his life, and that this was the foundation of his promise to protect Harry.

Rowling also revealed that Dumbledore’s death had indeed been preordained. By murdering Dumbledore (who would have died soon anyway due to his cursed hand) Snape proved to Voldemort that he was a loyal servant. This in turn led to him being placed as Headmaster of Hogwarts, where he was able to communicate with Dumbledore’s portrait.

This chapter further revealed that Harry was a horcrux, and that he would therefore have to die in order to destroy the piece of Voldemort’s soul that resided inside him.

Put simply, no other chapter in the Harry Potter series carried this many key revelations. As a result, reading ‘The Prince’s Tale’ was both intriguing and emotionally draining. Indeed, few authors ever manage to write such absorbing fiction.
