10 Biggest Scandals In American Politics
1. Watergate
What's interesting about America's most infamous scandal is how little we really know about it.
In 1972, five men broke into the Watergate Office Complex, presumably under orders from President Nixon, to allegedly tap the phones of the Democratic National Committee. However, besides the break in, the rest has never been confirmed.
As part of the ensuing investigation, the Supreme Court issued a subpoena to Nixon, ordering him to hand over tapes, which were used to record secret White House conversations.
Instead, Nixon erased 18 minutes from the tapes, got caught, and resigned the presidency. He was instantly pardoned by Gerald Ford.
To this day, no one knows what was on the tapes or exactly why the burglars broke into Watergate. Seems kind of mild when compared to the hard evidence revealed by Wikileaks.
