10 Biggest Scandals In American Politics
4. Jack Abramoff
No matter what cause they claim to be helping, people have a hard time trusting big government lobbyists for a good reason. With several million dollars at stake, they have a reputation for being shady.
Probably the shadiest of them all was Jack Abramoff. In 2006, Abramoff, known for championing several causes, was sentenced to six years in prison for several accounts of corruption when it was revealed that he was playing both sides of the fence.
Not only was Abramoff charging his clients (Native American casinos) more money than he was reporting on his taxes, he was also helping their opposition so he could raise his lobbying fees. Basically, just an all around "scumbag."
Lobbyists are disliked in general as citizens would rather their politicians speak for them instead of adopting special interest positions for campaign funding.
