6. Johnny Smith €“ The Dead Zone

While he was ice skating as a young boy in 1953, Johnny Smith fell and hit his head, knocking him unconscious. After waking, he advises the adult nearest to him €œDon€™t jump it no more€, which befuddles the adult. Not long after, the adult tries to jump start his vehicle and is severely injured when the battery blows up. Thus begins a lifelong blessing/curse where Johnny finds that he has a rare ability to be able to €˜read€™ people simply by touching them. As a young high school teacher in eastern Maine, Johnny is involved in a serious car accident leaves him in a coma for 4 and a half years. On waking, Johnny finds that he has suffered a neural injury and that his ability to read people and see the future has increased. Along the way he is asked to help stop a serial rapist and killer and events lead him on a crash course with a corrupt politician, Gregg Stillson, whom Johnny has foreseen, if allowed to continue on his path toward becoming president, would start a nuclear war. Johnny must race against time and outside forces to stop Stillson from destroying the world.
