10 Bizarre Place Names You Won't Believe Are Real

5. Yorkey's Knob, Queensland, Australia

Australia is rather good for its quirky place names. Among the most bizarre are Bong Bong, Innaloo, Lake Disappointment, Banana, Burpengary, and, err, Pimpinbudgie (hopefully a little area made up of chirpy, colourful birds doused in bling, sporting big canes and fur coats...) And then there's Yorkey's Knob, located in North Queensland just off of the Great Barrier Reef. What a crude, inappropriate name this is for such a scenic community, with its golden beaches, sunkissed surfers and luscious stretches of greenery, you might be thinking in outrage (though more likely amusement). Well, actually no - perhaps unfortunately, there is nothing crude or inappropriate about the origin of this name at all. A beloved fisherman from Yorkshire named George Lawson, inventively nicknamed Yorkey, settled in this part of Australia in the 19th century. Such an influence was he in the local area that this, err, knob of land became named after him. Voila. I did warn you that it's not as naughty as it sounds... Yorkey's Knob is now a popular holiday destination and trendy beach resort. There is nothing rude about it. At all. Quit sniggering.
