10 Careless Mistakes That Got Serial Killers Caught

8. The Son Of Sam Parked Illegally

Ted Bundy Mugshot

While Bundy used stolen cars to commit his crimes, which eventually resulted in his downfall, David Berkowitz used his own vehicle as a getaway car during every murder. The Son of Sam killer would evade police remarkably well, that is, until a parking infraction sent him to jail.

Son of Sam killed six people and attempted to kill seven others, all with a revolver in seemingly random attacks. Although police were determined to catch him, Berkowitz was impossible to identify. Incorrect eye-witness testimony and no discernable pattern to the crimes left police clueless.

What's even more peculiar is that Berkowitz was a paranoid schizophrenic who also committed arson and wrote disturbing letters to his neighbors whom he viewed as demons. According to his ravings, one neighbor, Sam, had a demon dog that encouraged Berkowitz to kill.

Despite neighbors alerting police to the letters, Berkowitz still carried on without being labeled more than a potential suspect.

Thankfully, an eye witness reported someone resembling Berkowitz in the area prior to hearing gunshots. She told police that other officers had been in the vicinity writing parking tickets.

One vehicle was ticketed for parking illegally... The owner? David Berkowitz. When police waltzed up to his front door, Berkowitz happily confessed to being the Son of Sam killer and even admitted that he was on his way to committing another murder.
