10 Celebrities Who Were Murdered By Their Own Fans

8. Andres Escobar

When Andres Escobar (no relation to Pablo Escobar) scored an own goal in the 1994 World Cup, he had no idea that it would cost him his life. Nine days later, the Colombian national team defender was dead.

Escobar was a key part of a Colombian national team that had only lost a single match in the 26 matches leading up to the 1994 World Cup. This was also a period when Colombian football was awash with drug money.

His namesake Pablo Escobar owned the Medellin football team Atletico Nacional, for which Andres played. The drug lord had pioneered the practice of using football clubs for money laundering, and other cartels had quickly followed suit. Colombian football flourished as a result. Many star players were offered higher wages to stay home instead of plying their trade abroad.

Pablo Escobar was killed in December 1993. Andres Escobar scored his fatal own goal in June 1994. Medellin was still in a state of anarchy. With the king gone, a thousand pretenders viciously fought each other for the crown. It was in this warring state that Andres Escobar walked into after his disappointing show at the World Cup. He was swiftly executed by six gunshots to the back in a Medellin parking lot.
