10 Classic Pieces Of Literature Perfect For Halloween
9. Dracula - Bram Stoker
Yet another classic tale of terror having been adapted into a television series for the 2013 Halloween season. Dracula is the king of the vampires and everyone knows that if there's one supernatural being that's hot these days it's the vampires. The story of Dracula has been adapted into a variety of films and the character has appeared in various other media including video games, Marvel comics, and television shows such as Doctor Who and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The novel is written as a series of diary entries and letters detailing the exploits of Count Dracula and introduces not only the eponymous villain but Van Helsing as well. The story is a late example of literary romanticism and is the reason we think of vampires as 'seductive.'
Sadly, there are probably more people who have seen the many film adaptations of Dracula than those who have actually read the novel by Bram Stoker. While Stoker did not create the legend of the vampire - it having been around for centuries prior - he did define the characteristics of the vampire as we know of them today. If you love your vampires attractive and mysterious yet dangerous and gruesome while lacking shameful "sparkling" attributes take your eyes off your tv screen and head to the library.
