10 Crazy Things Booze Does To Your Body
9. Shaken Or Stirred?
So it turns out that James Bond was a bit of a lightweight after all, ordering his martinis shaken, not stirred.
Turns out that a stirred martini will get you drunker.
In an episode of Mythbusters, they managed to prove that it is possible to taste the difference between a cocktail that has been shaken and one that has been stirred, but a second experiment carried out by the folks over at Gizmodo has determined that a shaken cocktail will also be less alcoholic.
They found that shaking a 70ml measure of vodka up with 25g of ice for 30 seconds will result in its potency being lowered by almost half, whereas the same amount of vodka stirred with the same amount of ice only dropped in strength by about a quarter.
This is due to the fact that the shaken ice diluted the spirit much more than the stirred.
This doesn't really matter if you're ordering a long drink as there will still be about the same about of booze in there anyway, but when you order a short drink like a martini, there's only so much room in the glass, so make sure you get your money's worth and order it stirred.
