10 Crazy Things Booze Does To Your Body
4. What Is “Asian Glow”?
Asian Glow, or Alcohol Flush Reaction, is a condition in which somebody who cannot metabolise the acetaldehyde in their system will flush bright red when they drink alcohol. It is known as Asian glow due to the higher percentage of Asians that suffer from it, but it also occurs in those of European descent.
This will usually occur on the face, chest and stomach and can manifest after just a single drink, before the person is in any way drunk. This usually means that they have to endure their less-flushed drinking buddies telling them that they're very red every ten minutes or so, which is awesome (can you tell that a certain writer suffers from this?)
For those who do not wish to have to field questions about the hue of their face all night, the glow can sometimes be prevented by taking antihistamines before drinking.
However, this can be kinda dangerous as it prevents the flush by preventing the alcohol from being broken down into acetaldehyde in the first place, meaning that it just stays in the system as alcohol and can make your much drunker than you intended to be.
Maybe just embrace the glow.
