10 Creepiest Hauntings At Hampton Court Palace
2. Grey Lady
Sybil Penn was the nurse of Prince Edward and the servant of four Tudor monarchs. She nursed Elizabeth I through smallpox in 1562 but ended up catching the pox herself and shortly died afterwards. Penn was buried in the St Mary's church, near the palace.
Her apparition was not seen or heard of for a long time until 1829 as Sybil’s tomb was disturbed when the church was renovated. It began many ghostly tales of a ‘grey lady’ seen to walk the corridors of the State apartments and Clock Court at the palace.
Most famously, her spirit is said to be linked to a mysterious spinning wheel concealed in the walls of the palace. The Ponsonby family were living at a grace and favor apartment when they were disrupted by the sound of a whirr from a spinning wheel coming from behind a wall. A tenant was so curious that he had the wall knocked to find quite literally an old, faulty spinning wheel.
How it got there and how it started going in motion remains a mystery.
