He became a heavy drinker because of the burden of his job, and began indulging himself in an extravagant lifestyle. This was a place where he showed off the guillotine he used to execute people, but to bring in the crowds he did something pretty twisted. He would have people pay him to decapitate a live sheep in his house for money. For a guy seemingly troubled by his job, it seems he also embraced the sadistic side of it.
