When you’re on death row, the only person you would dread more than an executioner is a bad one. 17th century British executioner Jack Ketch was definitely someone to be afraid of. He was so famous for his botched executions, that his name became slang for low life executioners, as well as being a synonym for death and Satan. He wasn’t the most popular guy.

He was so unpopular that crowds once attempted to lynch him for his poor attempt at an execution. This might seem extreme, but things can get heated when it’s a matter of life and death. These people might have been criminals, but watching anyone die and suffer more than they should because of someone’s incompetence is horrible. He was so incompetent, that it once took him eight attempts to chop off someone’s head. What makes this whole story creepier though, is that it was actually questioned as to whether he really was incompetent, or just sadistic enough to make the execution so much more painful and gory.
