10 More Deserving Winners Of Time's "Person Of The Year" Than The Pope

5. Margaret Thatcher

To say that Margaret Thatcher's death caused a schism across the UK would be something of an understatement. The woman who had and continues to have a profound effect on the UK's social and economic fabrics retained an equal amount of supporters and detractors. Her death brought out peals and joy and street parties in parts of the country that had suffered during her time in power. Elsewhere, many paid tribute to the former Prime Minister known as The Iron Lady. The shockwaves of her passing even affected the Top 40 pop charts; a surge in sales of Ding-Dong The Witch Is Dead from The Wizard Of Oz caused a rather odd bout of moralising from radio producers, who eventually decided not to play the song in its entirety. Thatcher is living proof that popular or otherwise, an abstract concept such as an individual's legacy can be a very powerful tool indeed.
