In 1915, during WWI, the German army were besieging the Osowiec Fortress, which was being defended by the Russian army at the time. In order to try and make quick work of this, the German army launched a barrage of artillery shells at the fortress, hoping to kill or drive out the defending forces, allowing them to take the position. This proved to be unsuccessful.

The Germans then tried again with even bigger weapons that should have all but ensured victory, but alas the Russians still held the position. So, the Germans did it again, only this time they launched canisters of chlorine gas alongside the conventional shells, knowing full well that those in the fortress did not have gas masks to protect themselves.

Believing the Russians to be finally dead, due to large amounts of screams heard from the troops in the fort followed by silence, the Germans began to advance, only to be attacked by a group of "Zombiefied" men who should not have survived. Covered in chemical burns, with eyes red from the gas, and coughing up blood, the Russian forces managed to drive the attackers back into a full retreat, no doubt managing to terrify the German soldiers with their appearance alone.

Two weeks later the resilient Russians finally abandoned their fortress.
