8. Spiritualist Camp €“ Cassadaga

There was something happening in the United States around the late 1800€™s that prompted individuals to follow a spiritualist path and wander off into the woods, as you€™ll soon see. Maybe there was a surge in the popularity of Henry David Thoreau? Whatever the reason, George Colby, a trance medium, was led by a Seneca Indian from Pike, New York to Central Florida in 1875. In 1894, he was granted land for his Spiritualist Camp. Colby named the area Cassadaga after a place in New York where he used to attend spiritualist meetings and events. Cassadaga is well known for its large amount of mediums and psychics. Because of this, it is called the €œSpiritualist Capital of the World.€ They offer spiritual healing, church services and mediation events. Much in the way of the Flora-bama bar, they welcome everyone, no matter if you€™re a believer or a sceptic. They are led by their nine principles that among others posit nature is an expression of the Infinite Intelligence, affirm the healing defined in the Bible, believe in moral responsibility and adhere to the belief of communication with the dead. It€™s just your everyday Mayberry, only with balls, crystal balls.
