10 Facts That Prove Florida Is America's Craziest State
7. Two Rivers With The Same Name
Yes, Florida is the kind of state that has two rivers with the same name. It is the only state with two rivers of the same name. Both rivers are called the Withlacoochee, with one originating the Green Swamp in Central Florida and the other starting in Georgia and merging with the Suwannee River, of state song fame. The northern river starts northwest of Valdosta Georgia and flows south into Florida creating the western boundary of Hamilton County. Dont worry if youve never heard of that, theres really nothing much there; the entire county only has 15,000 residents. The central river of the same name is 227 kilometres and similar to the rest of the state, it just cant make things simple. It flows west, then north, then northwest, before finally reaching the Gulf of Mexico near Yankeetown. Withlacoochee probably stems from a Muskhogean dialect and means little big water. It has been theorized that the name for the central river came from the name of the northern one. Perhaps Crazy River of Many Turns in a State that Makes No Sense was already taken.
