Leaving politics aside, for the most part Twitter is a platform which people tend to use for entertainment rather than coordinating mass rallies against the government, as the most retweeted tweet of all time demonstrates. If you missed out on the Ellen DeGeneres Oscar selfie you were probably living in a cave in the middle of nowhere - few tweets in the history of the platform have reached as wide an audience as the photo of Ellen with a host of megastars including Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep and Jared Leto. While it may or may not have been a marketing stunt (Samsung denies that it was), the fact that it became such a global phenomenon speaks volumes to the popularity of Hollywood and - perhaps more depressing - the selfie.
