The night is finally here! $50 billion in preparation all come down to the opening ceremonies. The stage is set, the crowd is ready, and the giant Olympic rings... weren't exactly up to scratch. Sochi had the ultimate intro planned for their Olympics: a giant show full of extravagant displays capped off by the lighting of a huge set of expanding Olympic rings. The rings were made of steel and started out small, before expanding tenfold as they were hoisted into the air over the stadium. The first four rings went off without a hitch, then, the fifth and final ring failed to open, as the crowd fell silent as they were confused by this catastrophe. The television announcers of the ceremonies fell speechless, and the term #SochiFail gained so much more meaning. From the first building construction, to the opening ceremonies, to the wrap of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, fails were ever present, and this article only represents a small portion of the hundreds of quirky happenings in Russia over the past few weeks. We would love to hear your favourite #SochiFail in the comments below, and remember... ...There is always 2018 South Korea.
