10 Heinous Projects That Remained Hidden In Classified Documents
6. Operation Paperclip
Operation Paperclip was the code name of the operation carried out by the United States Intelligence and Military Service to extract from Germany specialized scientists in the so-called Wonderful Weapons of the Third Reich, such as rockets, chemical weapons and medical experimentation after the collapse of the Nazi regime during World War II.
More than 700 scientists and their families were taken secretly to the United States, without the approval of the State Department.
Numerous documents were rewritten to erase the names of several scientists involved in that operation, in order to allow them to enter the country and prevent them from falling into the hands of the Soviet Union.
One such scientist was Wernher von Braun. His contribution to the North American space race and the advance of making the USA an atomic power was undeniable.
However, several US soldiers were outraged at having to work with “Nazi war criminals” and some of them were returned to Germany, although few were tried and even fewer convicted.
Much of the information about Operation Paperclip is still classified as absolute secret.
