7. The Birth Of Doritos

Doritos were born in Disneyland. Yes, that’s right, the ‘actual’ Doritos were originally Disneyland trash.

These ‘little pieces of gold’ is the literal Spanish translation to the word Doritos, and it’s hard to argue with that. These pieces of crispy goodness were first invented in the Mexican cantina in Frontierland called Casa de Fritos - an independent vendor within the Frito-Lays group.

The little slice of Mexicana came up with the idea of frying their unused tortillas at the end of the day. After a little experimentation, these tortillas were cut up into off-cut triangles, fried and served with a sprinkling of sea salt.

The revolutionary chips were added to the menu as a replacement to the bag of Fritos that regularly came with each meal. The choice became so popular, it became the staple side for each and every menu item, and the Dorito was born. The idea was so successful that Frito-Lays eventually took production in house and packaged the idea for national distribution that we know and enjoy from home today.
