Harold Cazneaux was another artist who began meddling in photography long before teenagers, or Paul McCartney, got their hands on a camera phone. He was an early pioneer of portrait photography in Australia and took his seflies very seriously as a form of expression.

By the early 1900s cameras had become widely available, and many amateur selfies such as this one were common. Because photographs took so much time to develop back then rather immediately at hand, it's more likely this woman was testing her camera rather than filling that days Instagram quota.
